Civil engineering is a broad field of engineering that deals with the planning, construction, and maintenance of fixed structures, or public works, as they are related to earth, water, or civilization and their processes. Most civil engineering today deals with power plants, bridges, roads, railways, structures, water supply, irrigation, the natural environment, sewer, flood control, transportation and traffic. In essence, civil engineering may be regarded as the profession that makes the world a most comfortable place to live.
The department vision is to continue to achieve national and international recognition through innovation in civil and environmental engineering education and research, and through the impact of our research and alumni in three focus areas: advanced infrastructure systems; environmental engineering, sustainability and mechanics, materials and computing. Our vision includes our department being a collegial, collaborative and welcoming environment in which to learn and work.
To create, disseminate and integrate knowledge of engineering, science and technology that expands the civil and environmental engineering knowledge base, which in turn enables the betterment of human society;
To develop and transfer innovative applications of engineering, science and technology to improve civil and environmental engineering practice; To be highly effective leaders in the conduct of interdisciplinary research and the development of innovative approaches to solving civil and environmental engineering problems;
To attract and welcome undergraduate students to our Bachelor of Engg. program in Civil Engineering, and to graduate them as problem solvers who use relevant engineering approaches to develop innovative solutions, who become leaders in their organizations, and who possess the knowledge and skills required for a wide range of careers, career challenges, and lifelong learning;
To attract and welcome graduate students into advanced study and to graduate Master of Science and Doctoral students who possess depth in their chosen focus area and are highly respected for their academic strengths, flexibility, and leadership;
To maintain an intellectually challenging and collaborative environment which is supportive and welcoming, and that enables and encourages our students, faculty and staff to achieve their best in a diverse community.
